Quoted:
TEHRAN - Iran's former reformist president Mohammad Khatami has
described the Holocaust as a "historical reality" - a direct attack
on his controversial and revisionist successor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
"We should speak out if even a single Jew is killed. Don't forget
that one of the crimes of Hitler, Nazism and German national
socialism was the massacre of innocent people, among them many
Jews," the cleric said in comments carried in the Iranian press on
Wednesday.
Read the rest [1]right here. More on Khatami [2]here.
I don't view Khatami's statement as being an apology for Iran's
oppressive regime, nor do I view it as an endorsement of every
position he might ever have taken. But I do view it as a sign for
hope. And, I must say, I'm glad not only for his unswerving
condemnation of the Holocaust, but also for recognizing, at least in
passing, that there were many victims of Hitler's unforgivable evil.
I don't mention it much because she is a private person, but, my
mother-in-law has a small tattoo that she rarely shows anybody (and
she might be embarrassed if she even reads this). She's a Pole, and
was one of Mengele's kids. She was injected as a child with multiple
experimental vaccines at his hands. The Jews were their most obvious
victims, but they were not alone. The Gypsies, the Slavs, and
countless other "undesirables" were their slaves and their
experimental specimens.
I have no excuses--none--for Iran's current ruling regime, which
oppresses the everyday people of Iran and endangers all those around
it. But I give a small cheer for this uniquivocal stance made by
ex-President Khatami.
