If you live in Michigan, one of the strangest quirks we have is that
you can register to vote as either a Democrat or a Republican during
primary elections, but, none of your votes in the Democratic primary
are counted. If you want to have a voice in Democratic politics, you
have to attend special caucuses set up privately by the party.
Literally, your vote in the primary is simply discarded.

Which means that in Michigan there's simply no reason to register as a
   Democrat. None. It's entirely symbolic.

So, let's say you're an independent-minded voter (like me) or even a
Democrat. So what? There's no reason not to go to your polling place
tomorrow for the Michigan primary elections, and vote in the
Republican primary for the Republican you like best (or hate least).
How you vote in the general election in November won't matter, but you
can make a difference in who Republicans choose. (I'm amazed at how
many Michiganders don't get this--seriously, your Democratic primary
votes are just discarded anyway, so there's no reason not to vote in
the Republican primary even if you're a true-blue Democrat.)

And if you're in Michigan, a Republican you might want to choose is a
guy named Keith Butler who's running for Senate. I'm not sure who I'm
going to vote for in November (I haven't made up my mind yet) but I'd
love to see Keith Butler get the Republican nomination. My lovely wife
has [1]more details on this interesting guy.

As I've often said, it's not healthy in this country to see one party
totally dominated by one race. More diversity in both parties would be
a good thing. Heck, on that basis alone, I'll vote for Butler if he's
   the nominee in November.

Go on ahead and register Republican and consider voting for this guy.
   There's no reason not to.
