On Lacuna Coil

[1]Lacuna [2]Coil - which means "empty spiral" in Italian - is an
ambient/goth metal band from Milan, Italy. Formed in 1996, the group
combines male (Andrea Ferro)/female (Cristina Scabbia) vocals in order
to create a heavy but melodic, melancholic, and ethereal effect. Their
most recent CD ("Karmacode", which was released in the spring and is
their fourth CD) sounds Kornesque, which they state that they did in
order to sound harder. This is in contrast to their earlier sound,
which was apparently more goth-metal. Ms. Scabbia said the musical
direction of "Karmacode" was influenced in part by Lacuna Coil's
extensive touring over the past two years in the United States, where
bands generally play a more aggressive style of metal than their
European counterparts. "American music, it's really in your face," she
told The Record (New Jersey). "That's what we wanted to have yet at
the same time retain our European sound."
Lacuna Coil came up through the European rock festival scene and are
currently playing on the main stage at Ozzfest (created by icon Ozzy
Osbourne). Click [3]here to listen to their music for free, and
[4]Disturbed from my hometown of Chicago. I will check out their
earlier stuff (which I hear is arguably even better) too.
