"Culture of Corruption" Meets "Pattern of Behavior"

   May the best phrase [1]win.
I have to assume the GOP is going to make major hay out of this
between now and November. The sitaution kind of annoys me, to be
honest: the GOP made a lot of [2]mistakes this election cycle, and
it's just like the Dems to rescue them from their own stupid venality
with what is, from all accounts, an act of high treason.
Hard to believe there was a brief moment there, after the Dubai World
Ports debacle, where the Democrats had at least the perception of
being the more credible party on national security. Not only do they
have the problem of a Democratic partisan who has clearly put the
interests of her party ahead of those of her nation, they're
compounding their mistake by actually defending her as some sort of
whistleblower patriot, instead of running away from as far and as fast
as they can like any sensible post-9/11 politician would. I'm at a
total loss to explain this behavior; how could they possibly think
that's going to fly? Does anyone else suspect Karl Rove mind control
   rays?
But this is still the party that thinks they can defend the
indefensible. And why not? The media will play along with the
[3]beatification of Mary McCarthy, and then academia will canonize
her. I can already see the book title: "The Politics of Patriotism."
She'll be the darling of the Ivy League lecture circuit. Harvard and
Yale will be so excited about hiring an actual traitor, they'll forget
all about their coveted pet Taliban monstrosity. Walter Duranty, eat
   your heart out.
Of course, those institutions are not the gatekeepers they once were.
[4]Others have stepped into those [5]roles, and you can no longer be
sure the voters won't heed the advice of their self-appointed
intellectual and moral superiors, and may decide to make up their own
   minds.
   The horror.
