cartoon wars Thank goodness for digital video recorders: I finally saw
this week's episode of South Park, Cartoon Wars.
What a scream. Did anyone else see it? I thought it was brilliant:
make fun of muslims who overreact to cartoons of Muhammed. Make fun of
people who completely panic over lunatic muslims. Make fun of Family
Guy. Make fun of South Park. Make fun of Comedy Central, Fox, and the
entire television industry.
Has there ever been such a television show?
It makes me think about why I used to love The Simpsons and now can't
stand it. The Simpsons used to be subversive, but really isn't
anymore. South Park, by being constantly topical, often produces
episodes that will seem obscure and out of date if you watch them in
10 years. But if you watch them now, today, they're funny... and at
least some of the episodes will survive the test of time because they
hit themes that are timeless. Man I love this show. They've managed to
make it to ten seasons--ten years!--and they're still funny. The
Simpsons stopped being consistently funny long before their tenth
season. South Park doesn't even show signs of slowing down.
I'll bet Family Guy gets a ratings boost from the whole thing, and
that they're ecstatic about the episode, even if it does make fun of
them.
