Jill Carroll: A Reappraisal

Hmm. While I do not retract the fact that I'm glad that Jill Carroll
was released unharmed, or the fact that her captors were vile slime
who need to be hunted down and killed as enemy combatants, it turns
out there is reason to wonder why exactly she was released and who
pulled strings to make it happen, especially when her captors chose to
   kill others?

Debbie Schlussel--who, fair disclosure, is both someone I frequently
disagree with and is also something of a friend--has [1]information on
Jill Carroll's background and ties to our eneimes. The letter from the
Jordanian government newspaper was most disturbing.

Nothing I see here indicates that Jill Carroll did anything illegal.
But it does strike me that some hard questions should be asked of her,
especially given how many others who were kidnapped like her wound up
   dead.

Debbie's getting some grief on this one that strikes me as excessive.
One may dislike Debbie's politics but is she honestly wrong in this
case to point to this woman's past, point to who her friends are, and
ask questions? Furthermore, are we letting sexism--we're glad to see a
woman out of harm's way--interfere with our willingness to ask hard
   questions?
