One thing I noticed is that discussion on both sites turned to male
circumcision. This is I suppose natural but, the two procedures are
very different.
One involves slicing of a large amount of erogenous and muscular
tissue, including nerves that control orgasm and contribute to sexual
pleasure, and which keep the organ clean. That would be male
circumcision.
The other involves completely removing almost all sexually sensitive
tissues and leaving an permanent open gash. That would be female
circumcision. The closest equivalent in men would be outright removal
of 90% of the penis.
Mind you, you should never buy into the completely discredited notion
that the foreskin removal procedure in boys is "just a flap of skin."
When you allow this procedure, you're cutting away not just skin but
muscle tissue and erogenous nervous tissue that also help control
orgasm.
You can find more information about this at [4]Dr. John Taylor's
ridged band web site. Taylor and his colleagues have published
numerous peer reviewed papers documenting just how much muscle and
dense nerve clusters are cut away in the male circumcision process.
As for religious arguments: Christians I refer to [5]Acts 15 and
especially to [6]1 Cor. 7:17-19 and [7]Romans 2:28-29. There is no
justification for the practice among them.
Among Jews, it's a harder case. I refer to the many arguments put
forth by [8]Jews Against Circumcision, and only note that amongst
other things they have historical evidence that the circumcision
practiced by Abraham was quite different in character from that
practiced today--they cut away a lot less skin back then. But I won't
otherwise try to argue.
I have no idea what the Muslim justification for circumcision is, but
the folks at [9]Quran.org have a pretty strong statement and links to
articles against it.
Although as I say, the two really are not comparable--most forms of
female circumcision are clearly worse--since the question was brought
up I thought I'd provide some links.
The one thing we have to get over on both of these issues of
mutilating children's sexual tissue is pretty much the same: the
widespread cultural taboos and prejudices people have, and the anger
people feel when you question them for doing something that's been
traditional for as long as they can remember.
Education's the only option I see, although I'm open to other
suggestions.
