   To the Editor:

As "The Rural War," by Robert Cushing and Bill Bishop (Op-Ed, July
20), illustrated so well, America's rural areas have indeed borne the
casualty burden of the Iraq war to a greater degree than urban and
suburban areas. But to state that this is primarily an "economics
story" is to overlook the fact that citizens on farms and in smaller
towns are often more conservative in nature regardless of party
affiliation and more likely to have a positive view of military
   service.

I know this to be true from my own personal experience. I grew up in a
rural area, enlisted in the Army and now live and work in the Chicago
   area.

The difference in outlook between many of those I work and live
alongside now, and those I grew up with, is significant and worth
   noting.
