	I began life a liberal collectivist. My family
	taught me to seek justice, pursue peace, and uphold
	human life, and rightly so. Unfortunately, they
	also taught me that the surest path to these was to
	cede our liberties to the federal government. It
	would appall them to hear it put this way, of
	course, but this was the message just the same. I
	learned one political remedy for failing schools,
	industrial pollution, soaring crime, and a host of
	other social ills: the expansion of state power.
