The Daily Update: Svidler the Russian Champion, plus Cap D'Agde
http://chessmind.powerblogs.com/posts/1225248656.shtml

Remember the [1]Russian Championship? It ended a couple of weeks ago
in a dramatic three way tie for first place between Peter Svidler,
Dmitrij Jakovenko and Evgeny Alekseev. A playoff was required to
determine the champion, and at the end of today's double round-robin,
   Svidler won with 3/4, ahead of Jakovenko's 2.5 and Alekseev's .5.
Svidler had to come from behind in the main event, and he did so here,
too, defeating Jakovenko in the last round to take the title.
In the other big event of the day, the preliminaries of the [2]Cap
D'Agde rapid tournament are over; here are the final standings for
   that phase:
   Group A:
   1. Caruana 5.5 (of 7)
   2. Ivanchuk 5
   3-4. Vachier-Lagrave, Bu Xiangzhi 4.5
   5. Cheparinov 4
   6-7. Kosteniuk, Lahno 2
   8. Sebag .5
   Group B:
   1-2. Carlsen, Nakamura 5.5
   3. Radjabov 5
   4-5. Karpov, Hou Yifan 3.5
   6-7. Koneru, Feller 2
   8. Skripchenko .5
As only the top four from each group advance to the knockout stage,
Karpov and Hou Yifan needed a playoff, which Karpov won. The
   quarterfinals are tomorrow.
N.B. Normally I'd list a bunch of games I found interesting, but for
various reasons I'll only mention one: Carlsen's win over Radjabov.
That game will be the subject of my [3]ChessVideos show later this
   week.
