ECC games of note, Round 3

Once again, I'd like to draw your attention to some of the more
interesting games played in the [1]European Club Cup.
Shirov-Fercec was a quick and impressive win for White in a 6.Bg5
   Najdorf.
Bogut-Grischuk was less entertaining, but showed that the cynical
attempt to play for a draw with the Exchange French does not guarantee
   success.
My favorite game of the day, by far, was Carlsen-Movsesian. Carlsen's
love of sitzfleisch chess has been noted more than once on this blog,
and while it nets him share of points, it sometimes backfires. Today,
ironically, he had a legitimate small edge and could have even won at
one moment. After missing that win (59.Ng5), the position really was
equal, but Carlsen kept pushing until he was lost. (By the way, if he
had won he'd have taken over the top spot on the [2]Live Top List.)
French Defense lovers might want to have a look at Alekseev-Vitiugov,
a Poisoned Pawn Winawer French where both players had chances to win
before it ended in a repetition.
Ponomariov-Nyback was a very original-looking Closed Ruy. Instead of
the standard 9.h3, Ponomariov played 9.a3, and it only got more
   imaginative from there: 9...Re8 10.Ng5N Rf8 11.d4 Bg4 12.f3 Bh5 13.Nh3
etc. Is this the future of the Spanish?
   Games downloadable from [3]TWIC.
