The Daily Update: All draws in the Russian Championship, Short wins the Commonwealth Championship, and more
http://chessmind.powerblogs.com/posts/1223349716.shtml
In the main event, all six games in the [1]Russian Championship, five
of them rather quickly. Only one game (Riazantsev-Vitiugov) saw any
real effort, and incredibly, its length (128 moves) was more than that
of the other five games combined (108 moves)! That's disappointing,
but the first three rounds were so good that the players merit some
slack.
Round 4 Results:
Lastin - Svidler 1/2-1/2
Morozevich - Timofeev 1/2-1/2
Riazantsev - Vitiugov 1/2-1/2
Tomashevsky - Alekseev 1/2-1/2
Maslak - Sakaev 1/2-1/2
Inarkiev - Jakovenko 1/2-1/2
Standings after Round 4:
1. Svidler 3.5
2. Lastin 3
3-4. Jakovenko, Vitiugov 2.5
5-8. Alekseev, Morozevich, Timofeev, Riazantsev 2
9-10. Sakaev, Tomashevsky 1.5
11. Maslak 1
12. Inarkiev .5
An event that just finished was the [2]Commonwealth Chess Championship
in Nagpur, India; the winner was Nigel Short with 9.5/11, half a point
ahead of Surya Shekhar Ganguly and a full point in front of Enamul
Hossain.
Finally, a quick update on the [3]Banja Luka tournament: Viktor
Korchnoi and Bartlomiej Heberla continue to lead. With two rounds
left, their 5/7 scores have them half a point in front of Geetha
Narayanan Gopal and a point ahead of Sergei Volkov and Zlatko Ilincic.
