The Daily Update: Russian Championship and more
http://chessmind.powerblogs.com/posts/1223266903.shtml
Let's start with the [1]Russian Championship. In round 3, Svidler won
while Lastin only drew (and was lucky to do so), which means that
Svidler leads alone (yeah, with nobody else) with a perfect 3/3.
Round 3 Results:
Svidler - Riazantsev 1-0
Jakovenko - Alekseev 1-0
Vitiugov - Morozevich 1/2-1/2
Timofeev - Inarkiev 1-0
Sakaev - Lastin 1/2-1/2
Maslak - Tomashevsky 1/2-1/2
Standings after Round 3:
1. Svidler 3
2. Lastin 2.5
3-4. Jakovenko, Vitiugov 2
5-8. Alekseev, Morozevich, Timofeev, Riazantsev 1.5
9-10. Sakaev, Tomashevsky 1
11. Maslak .5
12. Inarkiev 0
(It's pretty rare to see every score group represented after three
rounds; what's the record? Maybe a clever programmer can work out the
answer without too much work.)
Other events: there were [2]Bundesliga games too, and I've attached
one that shows off a great, prolific trap. Another, hitherto
unmentioned tournament is in [3]Banja Luka, the site of Kasparov's
first great success back in 1979. This year's tournament probably
won't be remembered in 29 years, but I always enjoy noting tournaments
starring Viktor Korchnoi, especially when he's doing well. So far, so
good: he has 4.5 out of 6, and is tied for the first with three rounds
to go.
Games for replay [4]here.
