It's not a surprise that Rybka won the [1]World Computer Chess
Championship, as it has been on top of the computer rating lists and
won most of the events it has entered since it burst onto the scene.
It won with an undefeated 8/9, a point ahead of Hiarcs, whose only
loss was to Rybka. That said, I'm not sure how impressed we should be
by this, as Rybka was playing on a gargantuan 40 core machine. Leaving
aside the jokey cell phone entry (scoring 0/9, thank you very much),
most of the other programs played on 4 to 8 core machines, which
hardly seems fair if the goal is to determine the strongest software.
Heck, I'd expect the almost antediluvian Fritz 5.32 to defeat Rybka if
the former played on 40 cores and the latter on a normal 4-core
   machine.
Meanwhile, in humansville, 19-year-old IM David Lariño Nieto won the
[2]Spanish Championship, winning all four of his knockout matches in
the tiebreakers. An impressive result, considering that he was the
fourth lowest rated player in the field of 16 (and #14 was one point
   lower, #15 three points lower).
