Observerations about the primaries....
http://www.antimedia.us/posts/1200860418.shtml
....are a dime a dozen in the blogosphere as well as the media. Since
they're so valuable, here's mine, for what little it's worth. :-)
1) No one knows what the future holds. Claiming that this candidate or
that one "can't beat" some other candidate in November is foolhardy at
best. We don't even know who the candidates will be yet, much less
what the issues will be. Remember GHW Bush, who was "unbeatable" after
the Gulf War? You'd think that sort of history would at least cause
people to exercise caution in making predictions.
2) Fred Thompson's performance has been disappointing. Despite the
fact that he's recently been drawing big crowds, he continues to end
up an also-ran. Furthermore, he publicly staked his future on a good
showing in SC (a tactical blunder in my estimation.) I'm not sure
third place is good enough to argue that he did well enough to meet
that standard although he can certainly claim to have beaten Romney.
When you go to a candidate's website, click on speeches, and find
nothing there past the end of December, you have to wonder if the
candidate and his staff are serious about running a campaign. Fred
went home to TN to be with his mother. Perhaps he needs to think about
that. Either get in all the way or get out all the way. It's time to
s**t or get off the pot.
For the Fredheads who are mourning is poor showing, take comfort in
the fact that Ronald Reagan "lost" the first eleven primaries and
still won the nomination. If Fred is serious, he can still win the
nomination. But he has to get serious. Deadly serious. Take no
prisoners serious. Otherwise, he's done.
3) There's lots of McCain triumphalism right now, but Romney has more
delegates and no one has enough to secure the nomination. Anyone who
gives up now is clearly not worthy of the Presidency anyway.
4) More than one person has announced that they "won't vote for"
candidate X. That's your choice, but if you cede the election to the
liberals, don't complain when this country goes further into the
ditch. Winners never quit, and quitters never win.
5) Ron Paul got 14% of the vote in Nevada and won second place. What
is up with that? Seriously, Nevadans - what were you thinking?
6) If the [1]SC exit polls are correct, there's a lot of people who
are basing their votes on something other than the candidates'
records.
For example, Huckabee won the anti-immigration vote. Huh? This is a
guy who is incredibly weak on immigration. That vote makes no sense at
all.
Huckabee also won the conservative vote. This makes no sense either.
Huckabee's record leaves no doubt that he will raise taxes and run up
debt. His comments about God and the Constitution are anti-American in
the extreme.
Huckabee won big among those for whom the religion of their candidate
matters greatly and among those for whom Christianity matters a great
deal.
This leads me to conclude that Huckabee is attractive to people just
like him - folks who would like to amend the Constitution to fit their
world view rather than the status quo.
McCain won the amnesty note. Republicans take note. If you elect
McCain you'll get amnesty, plain and simple. And you'll have no one to
blame but yourselves.
McCain also won among those for whom the issues don't matter. Can Fred
ever hope to win those voters? Can America survive those voters?
McCain also won on honesty, which proves that you can slap a "Straight
Talk" banner on the side of your bus and completely blind the voters.
There isn't much good to take away from these results. It appears to
me that America is in sad shape and getting worse. The Democrats are a
lost cause, and the Republicans appear to be. What's left?
