One of the guys I work with....

....is a former Marine who served in Vietnam (combat machinegunner,
serving along the border with North Vietnam.) Recently he was walking
to work at 6:30 AM when he noticed a fire in one of the buildings. He
ran toward the building and inside, trying to locate the source of the
   fire.
Turned out a caterer's cart was on fire, burning plastic was dripping
on the floor and flames were leaping to the fifteen-foot ceiling tiles
above. He tried to put it out by throwing a table cloth over it (to
smother it), but that just caught the table cloth on fire. So he
grabbed the cart's handles and ran, rolling it out of the building.
Other than some smoke damage, burned ceiling tiles and melted carpet,
   the building is fine.
Some of the young guys were talking about his actions, marveling at
the fact that he would run in to a burning building. Without even
thinking about it, I laughed and said, "He's a Marine. They're trained
   to run toward danger."
He thinks all the "hero" talk is silly. I don't, but I can see his
point of view. He was simply doing what he was trained to do, forty
   years ago.
