....are really [1]cowards?
Iraqi Police Forces captured the suspected leader of several Al
Qaeda in Iraq terror cells during operations with Coalition
advisers Jan. 18 in Samarra. The suspect was detained on suspicion
of directing several improvised explosive device and small arms
attacks against Iraqi security and Coalition forces.
The insurgent and his followers are reportedly involved in the
continuing, indiscriminate violence against civilians, and
resulting economic and security instability, in the area.
Iraqi Police confiscated numerous assault rifles, ammunition and
IED components during the operation. Iraqi forces also detained one
additional person for questioning.
The increasing capability and determination of Iraqi Security
Forces to provide for their own security was demonstrated by this
successful operation to capture insurgents responsible for attacks,
violence and criminal activity in the area.
There was minimal damage done to the objective. There were no Iraqi
civilian, Iraqi forces or Coalition forces casualties.
No casualties. Either these guys didn't put up much of a fight, or the
Iraqi Police are getting really good.
I think it's both.
Meanwhile, our guys are doing [2]their usual fine work clearing out
weapons caches.
Paratroopers from 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment,
82nd Airborne Division, discovered three weapons caches today south
of Samarra during a mission based on a tip from local Iraqis.
More than 250 rockets, mortars, and various other artillery rounds
were found. Propane tanks, wires, and other bomb-making materials
were dispersed among the three caches. Several large-caliber
machineguns and other small arms were also found.
âIn the past month, we have found over 500 rounds of artillery
which could have been used to make acar bombs and other roadside
bombs,â said Lt. Col. Viet Luong, commander of 2nd Battalion, 505th
Parachute Infantry Regiment. âThe people in and around Samarra are
tired of these attacks and are helping us to find these weapons.â
Lt. Col. Viet Luong -- a Vietnamese-American Army commander. Ain't
America great?
