Last night I caught part....
http://www.antimedia.us/posts/1186023976.shtml
....of the [1]Senate Armed Services Committee hearings for Admiral
Mullen and General Cartwright, the President's nominees for Chairman
and Vice Chairman (respectively) of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Today I
saw this headline: [2]Mullen says Iraq government "failing".
Some headline.
"It's important that we sustain a capability to fight al- Qaeda,
that we not let Iraq implode from an overall security standpoint,
and that in this transition we give the Iraqis an opportunity to
both lead from a security standpoint as well as politically,"
Mullen said.
"I do think we will be there for years, not months, but I don't see
it on a permanent basis," Mullen, 60, told the Senate Armed
Services Committee, whose members predicted the Senate will approve
his nomination. "We must consider our next moves very carefully."
Not exactly the same as the headline, is it?
What's more, Mullen stedfastly insisted that the surge was going "very
well", that our military had made "great progress" and that the Iraqi
troops were stepping up and taking the lead in a number of areas. He
repeatedly praised General Petraeus and said he was doing "an
excellent job".
It was laughable watching Senator Ben Nelson (D - Nebraska) question
the Admiral. He asked him several times if we shouldn't reposition our
troops to fight Al Qaeda in Iraq instead of getting in the middle of
the Iraqis' sectarian fight. I guess we should take comfort in the
fact that a Democrat has actually now admitted that Al Qaeda is in
Iraq. The Admiral had to keep reminding the Senator that we are
fighting Al Qaeda in Iraq - and winning.
It's interesting watching the Democrats scrambling to find a way to
reposition their opposition to account for the recent obvious
successes of the surge. How long do you suppose it will be before the
cowardly Republicans start backtracking and firming up their "support"
for the surge?
What a steaming pile of putzes.
