Don't ever think for a minute that what you do doesn't matter!!! I
understand your feelings of frustration and despair, I feel the same lately.
However, if people are still reading what you write, you ARE making a
difference. Don't forget the old saying, "The easiest way for evil to
prosper is for good men to do nothing." You ARE important and what you
write IS making a difference.

I know I haven't posted in a long time....

....and the reasons are personal. There are a number of factors
involved including projects that are consuming a great deal of my
time. During this interlude I have traveled to North Carolina to visit
my wife's family (an annual trek), celebrated our 35th wedding
anniversary with my Carolina girl, restarted a long-neglected
restoration project of my 1948 Chevy pickup truck, refinanced our home
and begun the arduous journey toward several remodeling projects.
But let's be frank. The main reason I haven't posted is because I
haven't wanted to. I've watched the Republicans in Congress begin to
attack the President and make similar demands to the obscene demands
the Democrats have been making for some time. I've watched the
politicians on both sides of the aisle completely ignore the reality
in Iraq (that things are demonstrably better) and pontificate about
how the "surge" isn't working even before it was started and after
they approved it!
I'm so completely disgusted with our Congress right now that anything
I might write about would be vitriolic in the extreme. I owe my
readers better prose than that.
Furthermore, I have felt for some time that the effort to turn things
around in this country is futile. The media is so incredibly biased
that even when confronted with facts that completely refute their
claims they stand by their stories. If we can't get the truth from the
media, this country is lost. It's not a question of if but when.
There are people in the blogosphere, good, decent people, who honestly
believe that they sometimes influence the media and the truth. While
there is some truth in their beliefs, their influence isn't nearly as
great as they delude themselves into believing. Even when their work
influences the media, the end result is lost on the vast majority of
Americans.
Don't get me wrong. Were it not for the efforts of many good
Americans, the situation we are in would be a great deal worse than it
is. People like the Patriot Guard Riders, Soldiers Angels, the
Gathering of Eagles and others have changed this nation in incredible
ways.
The problem is, when a Congressman can be caught red-handed with bribe
money in his possession and yet be re-elected, when Senators on both
sides of the aisle can completely ignore the will of the people and
even get angry when constituents contact them, the condition of this
country is so dismally bad that a great deal more than a few "gotchas"
of the media and the good efforts of patriotic Americans is needed if
we are ever to survive.
I spend a great deal of time discussing politics and current events
with friends and co-workers. Most of them are untouched by the
blogosphere and unaware of the supposedly great issues that consume
the blogosphere for days on end. Even when presented with the facts,
their opinions, molded by the liberal media, seldom change in any
meaningful way.
As disgusting as Congress is, an honest person must admit that they
are merely a reflection of America, and that's a scary thought. For
more and more Americans "fudging" the truth and "getting what's yours"
have greater precedence than honesty, integrity and principle. Given
that, it's little surprise that Congress displays the same traits,
magnified by their sense of privilege, their incredible wealth and
their insulation from life's many trials.
I haven't stopped reading other blogs. I haven't stopped caring about
America. But I have stopped writing here, because I don't want to
burden you with my malaise and I certainly don't want your sympathy.
This "sabbatical", if you will, may last a while longer. I have things
to do in my personal life that require a great deal of my time right
now.
If I return to writing here, it will be because I once again feel I
have something to say that matters and will make a difference. If what
I've written here today depresses you, I apologize. I felt I owed you
an explanation, no matter how disappointing it might be.
