....[1]about censorship.
Ratings decide who is on the radio or the TV. It is quite
democratic.
But for years we have heard a string of organized protests by
people who are not satisfied with not watching a program. No, no,
no. They want to keep other people from watching a show that they
do not like.
This is an insult. On any given day, there are dozens of programs I
am not watching. I do not need busybodies telling me what else I
should not be watching.
The newest boycott busybodies are Bill OâReilly and Al Sharpton.
OâReilly does not want ABC to let me watch Rosie OâDonnell.
Sharpton does not want MSNBC to allow me to watch Don Imus
broadcast his radio show.
I keep wondering when Americans will mature to the point that they
realize that the greatest way to support free speech is to allow every
crackpot to speak and oppose them with logic and reason.
The greatness of America does not lie in suppressing lies. It lies in
exposing truth. Yes, there are many liars with many motivations --
some of them in positions of great influence. But the way to defeat
them is by exposing, not suppressing, their lies. Let Rosie O'Donnell
speak. Thousands responded with facts.
Like Don, I don't watch O'Reilly and have no idea what Imus said that
has everyone so up in arms. I really don't care. What they said is
much less important than how we react.
There's still far too many in this country whose kneejerk reaction is
to censor everything they don't like. Sadly, they sit on both sides of
the aisle. (And for those who wonder, no, I'm not talking about
boycotts. Boycotts are a legitimate exercise of free speech.
Censorship is not.)
