     By the way - in Arab cultures, the significance of looking someone
     in the eye is tremendous. Arabs make eye contact far more often and
     for greater duration than Americans are generally comfortable with
     (They also stand much closer than we are accustomed to.) Breaking
     eye contact, even for brief periods, as we usually do at home, is
     often, whether consciously or not, interpreted as a sign of
     untrustworthiness.
     So the value of our president meeting face to face with the Iraqi
     government has sound cultural significance.

   If the Iraqis see the visit as the American imprimatur on their
   completed government, the visit may well have a great deal of
   significance to them.
   Perhaps, as elephants suggests, this was a watershed moment in Iraq.
