....I [1]wrote about Dave Gaubatz and the story of the WMD sites he
uncovered in southern Iraq. These sites have never been investigated,
despite Dave's herculean efforts to get someone, anyone! to followup
   on his intelligence gathering efforts.
Today begins what will be a series of articles about Dave Gaubatz amd
his story -- who he is, what his qualifications are, what he did in
Iraq and what he has done since to get the intelligence he gathered
exploited properly. Much of the information I will be revealing is a
matter of public record. Some of it is the result of my ongoing
interviews with Dave. A few things will be exclusive, revealed
publicly for the first time, on my blog.
Dave Gaubatz was a civilian employee, working for the Air Force Office
of Special Investigations (AFOSI), during the invasion of Iraq.
Dave served 22 years in the Air Force, the last twelve in AFOSI,
before retiring in 1999. When he realized that trouble was brewing in
the Mideast, Gaubatz knew that his skills would be needed, so he
volunteered for duty as a federal civilian employee of AFOSI in 2000.
After studying Arabic in the State Department language program for one
year, Gaubatz volunteered for duty in Iraq and was stationed in Saudi
Arabia, just thirty miles from the Iraqi border. Gaubatz was the first
US civilian federal employee to enter Iraq.
Gaubatz is not just "any" intelligence agent. His performance reviews
were glowing, rating him far above his fellow officers. (See [2]here
   and [3]here [pdfs].)
   Before the war -

-- In his first 9 months, outperformed any GS-12 I have seen in 14
years---with the productivity to back it up!
-- As Tech Prot Chief, 400% increase in IIRs (FY00 26/ FY01 already
50+ in 6 mo) and the quality was continually praised as outstanding
by DIA and XOQ, often published in Blue Line, benchmarked by FIR 1
-- Increased 302 cases from 3 to 5, bringing one 302 on line in
record time due to active targeting of the program---Program
Manager and AFRL/DE Director lauded support as the best and
     quickest ever received
-- Expertly worked a classified case with tremendous US Foreign
Policy impact and US State Dept visibility
-- Always volunteered extra time to mentor agents not even assigned
to him, respected for great leadership
-- Displayed the ultimate professionalism conducting case on fellow
agent---methodical work lauded by FIR 1
-- The absolute best agent who has it all, great dedication and
results, and puts the team first---Must Award!!!

During the war, Gaubatz was nominated for Civilian Performer of the
Quarter in a glowing review that called him "The Example for civilians
across the command", "The driving force behind Region 2's #1
collections detachment for the quarter---singlehandedly produced 15+
SIRs and 30+ IIRs; no other detachment even came close and Mr Gaubatz
was 'the key'", "Working under a specific terrorist targeting threat
to AAB, the U.S. forces closest base on the southern border of Iraq,
Mr Gaubatz conducted off-base CFSO activities in the highest threat
level possible", "Courage and resolve resulted in the identification
of terrorist plots involving the use of contractor vehicles aimed at
mass casualty attacks", and most telling -- "Collected/produced 36
IIRs/26 SIRs---reports meant countermeasures; enemy attacks thwarted -
Outstanding and courageous on the frontline of war;" (Those 36 IIRs
would become central to Gaubatz's ongoing efforts to complete the work
   he started.)
In short, Mr. Gaubatz is the penultimate intelligence agent.
Absolutely fearless, highly productive and extremely accurate in his
reports, when Gaubatz reports intelligence, you can take it to the
   bank.
So, when Gaubatz reported four sites in southern Iraq, three in the An
Nasiriyah area and one in Umm Qasr, that contained chemical weapons
produced after 1991, including some banned missiles, it was only
natural that he would expect his work would result in a thorough
   investigation of the sites.
That was three years ago. None of the sites have been investigated and
now, some in our government are actively working to prevent the sites
from ever being investigated. In fact, some witnesses are being
coerced into not testifying on threat of death.
My next article will describe what Dave found in southern Iraq,
including information never before revealed publicly, that will reveal
the absolute urgency of getting these sites secured and investigated.
