....[1]Adventures of Chester, published [2]an essay at TCS titled
Unfrozen Caveman Voter. It's an interesting essay, but one particular
   item caught my eye.

"Many of you have in your veins German and Italian blood. But
remember that these ancestors of yours so loved freedom that they
gave up home and country to cross the ocean in search of liberty.
The ancestors of the people we shall kill lacked the courage to
make such a sacrifice and remained slaves."

I spent some time tracking the quote down, and, with the help of a
librarian, determined that it first appeared in the NY Times on July
17, 1943. The quote actually comes from General George S. Patton's
secret order of the day, read to the troops by an unnamed colonel
standing in a gun turret aboard a troop transport on the eve of their
   landing in Sicily.
What struck me about General Patton's statement is that it seemed so
profound and so apropos to today's world. We constantly hear how the
world hates America, how we should try to understand why they are so
angry. Perhaps Patton's statement, made on the eve of the landing of
our troops in Sicily, contains the crux of the problem. We Americans
hail from every country in the world, yet we are different. Our
ancestors had the courage to leave home and the country of their birth
and "cross the ocean in search of liberty".
The people that stayed behind chose "safety" and slavery over freedom.
Small wonder they despise us now. We stand as a daily testament to the
   cowardice of their forefathers.
