....and [1]removes all of Hajj's photographs from their site after the
second fake was uncovered by bloggers.
Reuters ended its relationship with Hajj on Sunday after it found
that a photograph he had taken of the aftermath of an Israeli air
strike on suburban Beirut had been manipulated using Photoshop
software to show more and darker smoke rising from buildings.
An immediate enquiry began into Hajj's other work.
It established on Monday that a photograph of an Israeli F-16
fighter over Nabatiyeh, southern Lebanon and dated Aug 2, had also
been doctored to increase the number of flares dropped by the plane
from one to three.
On Monday? Please! Bloggers uncovered this on Sunday. Reuters is
merely trying to get out in front of this scandal before it takes them
down completely.
When the first fake was uncovered, Reuters somehow managed to replace
it with an "original". Where did that come from? And if Reuters had
possession of it all along, why didn't the editors notice the glaring
difference between the two?
One has to wonder where all those vaunted layers of protection are
that the media keeps insisting separate them from "mere" bloggers.
From my vantage point, it looks like Reuters never would have done a
thing without being completely embarrassed by the blogosphere. Now
they're doing just enough to douse the flames (they hope) and put this
scandal behind them before anyone looks deeper into their behavior.
Given [2]Bruce Kesler's expose today, that's unlikely. What is much
more likely is that the pressure will get more intense, as bloggers
begin to smell blood. (Hat tip to [3]lgf, who is either collapsing
under the load of page hits or undergoing a DoS at the present.)
