Two Hundred Years Ago

The Corps of Discovery has divided. Meriwether Lewis and about a third
of the party are ascending (on horseback) the Big Blackfoot River.
William Clark and the other two-third of the party are ascending (also
on horseback) the Bitterroot River. It will be more than a month
before the parties reunite. Historians have questioned the wisdom of
dividing the party, since it made each part more vulnerable. That
things worked out doesn't make it a wise decision. Clark halted his
party for a "sumptuous" lunch to celebrate the Fourth of July. Lewis
didn't mention the holiday. It's been 230 years since the Declaration
of Independence was signed. It had been only 30 when Clark wrote about
the event in his journal. [1]Here are the entries for this day.
